Saga Quest 6: The Battle of Five Armies

Victory on the fourth attempt!

The Deck

On the Doorstep has been a tough journey so far and I've heard that The Battle of the Five Armies takes that toughness to an even higher level. My first instinct was to go for a Leadership-Tactics deck, featuring both Dain Ironfoot and Thorin Oakenshield. I was debating between Gimli for the tactics inclusion or Oin for Spirit + Tactics. A few ideas were thrown down into a rough draft, but I didn't want to waste valuable deck-building time only to find out my strategy was all wrong.

So I decided to take my first crack at the quest with the Dain's Mountaineers deck I used against The Lonely Mountain. The only additions were Thror's Golden Cup and the Mithril Shirt that I won during my last victory. The plan was to go in, get a feel for the quest, and come back with a deck designed just for this scenario.

And then I won!...and then I noticed a few terrible mistakes. And again. And yet again. But the deck did hold its own really well, so why just stick with it?

The Recap

It's frustrating to see that "fourth attempt" up at the top. Why? Because I actually be the quest all four times, but made one terrible mistake early on during each of the first three attempts (using a Lore resource to pay for Kili, neglecting to put a Bodyguard of Bolg from the encounter deck into the staging area at the end of round 1, not raising my threat the second time I used Bilbo's ring for a resource). Each error was early enough, and the deck worked well enough, that they would not have likely affected the outcome (maybe made the game run 1-2 extra rounds), but they happened too early to have any definite answer as to what would have happened.

I had heard that Battle of the Five Armies was a pretty nasty quest. Truly, there is a lot to take care of and keep your focus on, but it actually ended up being pretty enjoyable to play. I really did not mind the three re-dos. That's surprising after the first two grueling quests in this saga box. Now, that might just be a testament to how crazy dwarves w/Dain can be. And I can see that multiplayer might be a whole different story. But for now, I'm marking this as a favorite quest and will be returning here with decks that can pull out major numbers on all three stats (willpower, attack, defense).
